What Are Raw Foods
Raw Foods are foods that have not been cooked, baked or heated in any way above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. They still have all the enzymes, vitamins and minerals, just as nature allowed them to grow. Because of this, raw foods are easier to digest and absorb, and thus are a much healthier choice than cooked or baked foods.
The foods that you can include in your diet are raw plant-based foods such as fresh fruits, leafy greens, root vegetables, herbs and spices, as well as nuts and seeds.
You can eat those foods as part of a mono diet, where you eat one food until you are full, or you can make tasty salads, raw soups, smoothies, fruit pies and other cool treats to satisfy your taste buds. A lot of raw recipes are similar to conventional foods, and thus you can still enjoy your favorite foods, but without all the harmful ingredients.
Some raw foodists go to the extreme of eating only fresh fruits. This is called the fruitarian diet, which does allow for small amounts of vegetables and other foods in the diet. However, it is not enough to properly nourish the body. Thus the fruitarian diet may be suitable for a short period, but not for long term.
Another extreme version of the raw food diet is the sproutarian diet, where the dieters consume sprouts as their main source of food. Even though sprouts are very healthy and contain lots of vital nutrients, this diet is a temporary diet as well, because in the long run your body needs a variety of foods.
And then there is the juicearian diet where only freshly squeezed juices are consumed. It is a temporary diet, but nevertheless, it has many health benefits to offer such as aiding in weight loss, cleaning the digestive system and restoring nutrients back to the body.
Some raw foodists also enjoy raw meats, dairy and eggs. But caution needs to be taken as raw animal products can contain harmful bacteria. Thus the raw foodist opt for products that come from free range and grass-fed animals. Studies show that the products from these animals do not pose such a high health risk as those from conventionally raised animals, as they contain less harmful bacteria.
